Wake County Busted Mugshots Explained
A mugshot is just an ID photo taken at booking. The booking record around it holds the details. No single Wake County office keeps everything. The City-County Bureau of Identification, or CCBI, once published the county's arrest photos. The Wake County Sheriff's Office runs adult detention and its own records. Raleigh, Cary, and Apex police each produce their own incident and arrest reports. The court side of a case lives with the Wake County Clerk of Superior Court.
Most bookings start with an arrest by the sheriff or a town department. Then the person lands at the Wake County Detention Center on Hammond Road. Some go to the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center downtown instead. Booking can generate a photo, the booked charges, bond details, and a custody entry. That custody entry is only a snapshot. Release, transfer, an outside hold, or a court date can change it. The arrest record itself still stands behind all of that.
Wake County busted mugshots come from the booking process. Each photo is taken at the jail when a person is processed into custody. The image stays on file with the arrest record and may appear on public rosters and sheriff listings. A mugshot is simply one piece of the booking file, nothing more. To see the full picture, check the jail roster, the court docket, or the clerk's case file, since a photo alone never tells the whole story of what happened next.
What a Wake County Booking Record Shows
No single screen in Wake County shows every field. Treat this inventory as a map. Use it to ask the right agency for the right document. Historical CCBI pages displayed some arrest-detail fields. The current WCSO inmate interface works differently, and photo behavior takes human verification. A missing field is not an invitation to fill it from an unofficial copy.
| Field | What it can show |
|---|---|
| Name and identity | The displayed name, possible official alias, booking or arrest ID, and an age or other identifier only when the source lawfully publishes it. |
| Arrest and booking time | Arrest date, time, intake date, processing time, or last update. CCBI’s former 48-hour view was sorted by processing, not always by the moment of arrest. |
| Agency and location | Arresting agency, booking agency, arrest location, incident location, city, county, and facility. A Raleigh, Cary, or Apex label is not itself a jail location. |
| Charge information | Exact charge wording, statute number, offense class, count, warrant or hold description, and any source abbreviation. A charge remains an charge. |
| Bond and release terms | Bond amount and type, a written promise, conditions, court date, magistrate information, or a statement that the value was not published. |
| Photograph | Whether an identification photo exists, its source and date, and whether the current agency displays it. Historical CCBI publication does not prove that WCSO’s current view shows a photo. |
| Custody and disposition | Current facility, release, transfer, court date, dismissal, not-guilty result, judgment, expunction, or seal only when supported by the responsible official system. |
Keep provenance with whatever you find. Save the direct URL and the agency name. Note the access date and any update wording. Say whether the page is live, historical, copied, or gone. This small habit keeps a copied image from passing as current custody status.
How to Obtain a Wake County Booking Record or Photo
Name the record before you ask for it. A WCSO detention entry, a CCBI arrest record, a municipal incident report, an identification photograph, and a court disposition are all separate requests. The county's public-records page points general requests to Wake County NextRequest and sends court matters to the Clerk. For sheriff incident reports, WCSO Records sits at 330 S. Salisbury St., Suite 2nd Floor Records S208, Raleigh, NC 27601. Email them at Sheriff.Records@wake.gov. The fax is 919-743-7372, and the phone is 919-856-6600. Mail a written request with a $2 check or money order, never cash, per the WCSO page.
- Write the full name, any known booking or case number, approximate arrest date, arresting agency, and the exact item sought.
- Send a sheriff incident-report request to WCSO Records, a CCBI arrest-record or identification-photo question to the CCBI criminal arrest records page, or a general county request through NextRequest.
- Ask whether the image is a separate identification-photograph record, whether any fee applies, and whether material is withheld under G.S. §132-1.4 or another restriction. The current CCBI fee and response method should be confirmed on its live page.
- For what happened after booking, use the Wake County court page and the Clerk. A request for an official copy is different from viewing public docket entries online.
Skip any promise of a fixed turnaround. One access option is a public kiosk at the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center, 330 S. Salisbury St., reported after the CCBI stopped publishing online. Check the kiosk instructions, hours, fees, and delivery options before you travel or mail money.
Retention rules matter for an old Wake County mugshot too. The North Carolina sheriff records schedule allows standalone identification photos to be destroyed after three years. A photo filed in a felony case follows that case's schedule, including a 20-year period for solved felony histories, while solved misdemeanor histories generally carry a three-year disposition. Nothing in these rules builds an online archive. Ask WCSO or CCBI whether a photo is still separate, filed with a case, or transferred under the approved schedule.
North Carolina Mugshot and Arrest-Record Law
G.S. §132-1.4 anchors public arrest information in North Carolina. It marks out what the public can see: the time, date, location, and nature of the alleged violation, plus identifying details and the circumstances of an arrest. Other investigative material stays restricted. The statute does not force agencies to post every ID photo online.
G.S. §15A-502 allows photographing and fingerprinting people charged with qualifying felonies or misdemeanors in the situations the law describes. That supports identification records. It is not a blanket publication order, and the old CCBI web portal was a county practice rather than a statewide mandate.
Some material must never be republished. Juvenile information, protected victim details, medical information, sealed or expunged records, and anything restricted by law falls in that group. For qualifying cases, North Carolina Courts' expunction guidance and official expunction forms are the right legal starting points. Even an eligible court outcome will not wipe every copied page or search-engine snippet at once.
No enacted North Carolina law grants a universal free mugshot-removal right. If a record is wrong, start with the originating agency and the Clerk. Some publishers advertise free correction paths backed by documentation, including RecentlyBooked, Mugshots.com, and Mugshots.zone. Those are publisher policies, not legal rights. Avoid unverified paid services, and remember that deleting a county page does not remove copies living elsewhere.
The North Carolina Archives schedule treats identification photos, case files, warrants, and detention records as separate record series.
How to Find Wake County Recent Arrests
The right search path depends on your question. Someone booked moments ago may appear in the current WCSO custody view. A released person can drop out of that view. The arrest record endures, though. A person serving a state sentence belongs in the N.C. Department of Adult Correction search, not the county jail route. The old CCBI online feed is historical now. So a stale link or cached result proves nothing about current status.
- For live custody, open the official WCSO Inmates route through the Police-to-Citizen portal. The portal rejected automated research, so confirm the live fields and photo policy yourself.
- For a recent arrest photograph or historical arrest detail, use the CCBI records route, the reported public kiosk, or a focused records request. Treat the old Last 48 Hours and date-range pages as deactivated documentation.
- For a court event, use North Carolina eCourts and then the Wake Clerk for an official record. A docket view is not the official court record.
- For state prison, probation, or parole status, use NCDAC Offender Public Information. It expressly excludes county-jail information.
- For federal custody use the BOP locator; for immigration detention use ICE’s locator. Neither is a Wake photo roster.
Sometimes a search comes back empty. That happens. Tell readers plainly when the official page was down or showed no match when checked. A blank result only means no listing appeared at that moment. Someone could have been released, moved, or had a record expunged since.
Where Wake County Busted Mugshots May Appear
Start with official sources every time. News stories and third-party pages might surface an old lead, but neither one functions as a live Wake County roster. A copied entry from those pages proves nothing about who is actually in custody right now. Treat them as background rather than confirmation.
| Channel | Photo? | Official? | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| WCSO Inmates | Not confirmed | Yes | Check current county custody at the official Police-to-Citizen route. |
| CCBI former 48-hour and date-range views | Historically yes | Yes, historical | Use the user guide and records page to understand the old route, not as a live feed. |
| Public kiosk and records request | Ask for the record | Yes | Use the John H. Baker center or the responsible records office after verifying current instructions. |
| Wake courts and Clerk | Usually not a booking photo | Yes | Find hearings, dispositions, and official copies. |
| NCDAC, BOP, or ICE | Varies, not a county gallery | Yes | Use only for the matching state, federal, or immigration custody. |
| WRAL, ABC11, CBS 17, News & Observer | Selective | No, editorial | Use dated case coverage as context and follow it back to the official record. |
| Wake pages at Busted Newspaper, RecentlyBooked, Mugshots.com, Arrests.org, or Mugshots.zone | May show copied images | No, unofficial | Check exact county, date, agency, and disposition. A current-looking page may be stale. |
For current custody, the place to test is the official WCSO inmate route. That access point is where a visitor can search directly. It is shown here for reference only, not as a gallery of individual people.

Keep in mind that interfaces change. A saved screenshot goes stale fast, so the live source link matters far more than any dated image you may have kept.
Busted and Booked in the Wake County Jail Roster
WCSO runs its adult detention operation through two facilities: the Wake County Detention Center at 3301 Hammond Road and the John H. Baker Jr. Public Safety Center at 330 S. Salisbury Street. The official inmate inquiry is the lead worth checking for current custody. Field names and photo behavior on the live portal may differ from what you expect, so confirm details there rather than assuming a fixed format.
| Search or result field | What it answers |
|---|---|
| Name or booking number | Whether the current custody system returns a matching entry. Search spelling carefully and do not equate a name match with identity. |
| Booking or arrest date | When the county entry was created or associated with an arrest, if displayed. |
| Agency and charges | Which department brought the person into the system and what was alleged at booking. |
| Bond and facility | Release information, if published, and the current detention location, if the system provides it. |
| Photo and status | Whether a current photo is displayed and whether the entry is still in custody, released, or transferred. |
- Open WCSO’s Police-to-Citizen portal and choose the current inmate route.
- Use the narrowest official search fields available, then compare agency, date, and charge details.
- Record the time checked and distinguish “not found” from “released” or “expunged.”
- If the portal is down or a historical photo is needed, ask WCSO, CCBI, or the kiosk for the precise record.
Visitation details are not the same as a roster, so keep them separate. The Wake County Sheriff's Office handles video visits at the Hammond Road detention center on Mondays through Thursdays. Two windows apply: 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. To book a slot, call 919-857-9103 at least 24 hours ahead, during those same weekday hours. County holidays mean no visits at all. Rules can shift, so confirm before you go.
A current custody view answers who appears in the system now, not whether an old Wake booking record exists.
Busted Last Night: Wake County Booking Feeds
Wake County once gave the public two live booking windows. One was the CCBI "Last 48 Hours of Arrests" view, which listed newly processed arrest photos with the freshest result on top. The other covered a chosen date range, up to six months at a stretch. Its historical reach went back to April 27, 2007. Both are gone. Treat every old CCBI link as a piece of history rather than a promise of what loads today.
The county reportedly pulled the plug on August 17, 2026. Reporting from Axios, Pine & Cardinal, and CBS 17 traces the shutdown and the county's move to a single public kiosk downtown. No steady official online feed has taken the old site's place.
Beware of third-party pages wearing fresh dates. Many simply copied or crawled the old data, and a recent-looking date on those sites proves nothing about what the county publishes now. When accuracy matters, go straight to WCSO, the downtown kiosk, CCBI, or a focused request. Also skip any talk of a "weekend surge." Nothing supports a hard number. The old 48-hour label described a processing window, not instant publication.
North Carolina DOC Offender Photos
Once someone moves from the Wake County jail into state hands, a different tool takes over. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction offender search tracks state prisoners and people on probation or parole, with records going back to 1972. County jail bookings are not in it at all. When you run a search, jot down the name or ID, the date, and whether the status is prison, probation, or parole. The live system can display a photo, though no permanent public photo archive exists. N.C. SAVAN sends custody notifications but is not a photo search.
Federal and immigration custody follow separate paths. The Federal Bureau of Prisons locator finds federal inmates from 1982 forward. The ICE Online Detainee Locator handles immigration detention. U.S. Marshals policy generally withholds prisoner mugshots for privacy reasons. Keep each of these results in its own lane, separate from county custody and court matters.
Think of the NCDAC page as a state-custody tool. It is not a Wake County mugshot gallery, and it works best after custody has changed hands.

The image drives the handoff point home: a state offender search earns its keep only after a person enters state custody or supervision.
Booked, Released, or in Another Custody
"Not on the roster" does not mean "no arrest." Searchers trip over this constantly. The map of record locations below sorts out where a booking actually lives, whether the person has been released, or whether another agency holds them now.
| Custody state | Best Wake-area source | What it can show |
|---|---|---|
| Just booked or still in county custody | WCSO Inmates, if available | Current custody entry, facility, charges, bond, or photo only if the live system publishes them. |
| Released or transferred | CCBI/WCSO request, kiosk, or originating agency | Historical booking or arrest record may remain even after the person leaves the jail view. |
| State prison, probation, or parole | NCDAC | State custody or supervision, not county-jail booking information. |
| Federal custody | BOP or USMS materials | Federal location limits and custody information, not a Wake photo gallery. |
| Immigration detention | ICE ODLS | Immigration custody within that locator’s limits, not a criminal conviction. |
After a Wake County Booking: Court Disposition
A Wake County booking leaves a paper trail you can follow. The Wake County court page and North Carolina eCourts let you search hearings by name, citation, county, or case number. The eCourts Portal shows public docket entries online, though it is not the official court record. For an official copy, go through the Wake Clerk. The directory lists 919-792-4300 for criminal misdemeanors and felonies, 919-792-4325 for records checks and expunctions, 919-792-4000 for the main Clerk, and 919-792-4900 for magistrates.
A case moves in stages. Arrest and booking come first, then the first appearance and bond, then later hearings, and finally the disposition. Charges can end in dismissal, a plea, a reduction, or a judgment. Know the vocabulary: an arraignment is a court stage, bond is a release condition, and expunction is a legal process that can remove qualifying records from public access under the applicable law. Each term means something different, so keep them straight when you read a docket.
A news story, a jail booking entry, and a court docket answer different questions. Each is its own record. The disposition is the one that matters for a final outcome. It shows what the court actually decided after the case moved through the system.
Wake Sheriff App and Public Alerts
The Sheriff's Office publishes the Wake Co Sheriff's Office app for crime reporting, tips, and general public-safety updates. Think of it as outreach. It does not replace WCSO Inmates or CCBI for custody and booking-photo searches, and no mugshot feed is built in.
Social media from WCSO posts selected incidents and requests for tips, but there is no countywide booking-photo schedule there. N.C. SAVAN sends automated custody notifications, and ReadyWake handles emergency conditions like flooding, gas leaks, and police activity. None of these serves as a booking roster.
Wake County Busted Mugshots by City
A city label tells you which agency handled an event or where it happened. It does not always tell you the booking county. Raleigh, the county seat, leads the pack in the OSBM July 1, 2024 population estimate. Boundaries blur, too. Cary reaches into Chatham County, and Apex holds a small Chatham slice, so the county listed on the official record decides where you search next.
- Raleigh Busted Mugshots covers Raleigh Police incident data, the county booking distinction, and the Wake records path.
- Cary Busted Mugshots explains Cary Police reports, the 24 to 48 hour report-processing note, and the Wake/Chatham boundary.
- Apex Busted Mugshots covers Apex Police records, the absence of a confirmed daily photo feed, and the town retention schedule.
For the complete chain, the city pages point back to this county-wide guide. The guide covers custody searches, CCBI, the kiosk, feeds, courts, and state and federal sources. One caution is worth repeating. If a city name shows up on an unofficial site, check the arresting agency and the county before you trust it.
